It’s not you, it’s me— actually it’s everyone. Breakups happen everyday and fuel an entire media industry— movies, television, novels, music… One breakup that gets little mention is the platonic breakup, the fall-out of friends. Moving On is a collection of breakups between friends and lovers, focusing on those that occurred in people’s twenties. This project features 60 stories from people of all ages across the country. It is organized by time—ranging from 6 days to over 50 years post-breakup. Utilizing collage and a playful tone, Moving on offers an interactive zine for readers to fill-in, draw, crumple, rip-out, and reimagine, in an attempt to give them a hands-on, cathartic experience and remind people that breakups are another part of life!
The Process
Thesis Party
As part of the thesis process, we had to host a little party to test out different aspects of our project. So I had people fill out my survey on my laptop and see what kind of responses I would get and if the questions made sense before I sent it out into the world. I also had paper that people could write down red flags they've experienced and I later used those to play the game I call "Dealbreakers!"
Zine-a-thon
I had no idea what a zine was but it was recommended that I go to this event on campus. So with the responses I got, I made a sample zine! And it felt like the perfect way to tell these stories.
Posters
From responses that I got, and personal experience, I made simple posters with a QR code to my survey to put up everywhere I went from New Paltz to New Jersey, Florida to California...

In total, I received 86 responses so far!

Since you're already here, why not take it!
